We believe that a better world is possible, changing one life at a time.

What we do/Medical-Surgical Center

In 2008, at Ampefy, Change had already created a small dispensary next to the local school. Following the growing need for a larger, public multi-specialty health center accessible to the entire population of the district, we started working on it in February 2011.

Inaugurated on April 25, 2014, the Saint Paul Medical-Surgical Center (CMCSP) is now operational with medical interventions, training of local staff and a nutritional center. The Medical Center is the reference point for more than 900,000 people living in the Itasy Region. This is because some of the services we provide are unique in the region and see patients arriving from the capital, Antananarivo and other regions of the country.

General Medicine
In our general medicine departments, we carry out various activities including: ultrasound, radiography, endoscopy, laboratory tests and drug distribution.

The patient can arrive at acceptance independently, sent from another clinic, or sent by our nutrition teams active in the area. The cost of visits and medications is up to 70% lower than that of local pharmacies and clinics.
The hospital is financed by resources from the tickets of medical visits and medications. Given the quality of the machines present, the main hospitals in the district send their patients to our Center for specialist visits and exams.
Surgical room
The surgical activity in a health center is what determines the transition between local medicine and hospital. In our modern operating room, we carry out, among other operations: caesarean sections, cataracts, hernias, cysts and sutures. The room is technologically advanced and complies with all European standards and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.
Obstetrics
Since its creation, Change has wanted to invest a lot in its maternity journey, which consists of providing assistance to women throughout their pregnancy, free of charge. This is why we have set up a delivery room and a post-partum room, equipped with all the necessary tools to care for women up to the first weeks after giving birth.
The process starts from raising awareness in the villages and continues with the offer of two blood tests, three ultrasound scans, medications, in addition to assistance for natural delivery or caesarean section and a pre-partum course.
Between January and September 2024, about 1,500 women participated in the maternity program.
Paediatrics
Change has started a pediatric clinic that guarantees periodic checks to all children in the district.
Change wanted to equip itself with this specific figure to guarantee a real education and prevention activity for the most fragile and numerous segment of the Malagasy population. Indeed, more than half of Madagascar's population is under 15 years old.
Ophthalmology
Since 2016, thanks to the initiative of some Italian volunteer ophthalmologists and opticians who have trained local staff at Ampefy, Change also offers ophthalmology services.

The visually impaired patient is guaranteed an eye exam, the deficit is measured and custom-made glasses are built with the frame chosen by the patient. The entire process takes only 30 minutes and costs about 70% less than the cost of the cheapest service in the surrounding area.
Every year a limited number of glasses are donated free of charge to beneficiaries who cannot afford to pay for the service. Finally, the patient with serious visual problems may be sent to other hospitals or operated in our operating room, if there is an ophthalmic mission at that time.
Dentistry
Our dental dispensary has been operating, since 2009. It has two clinics with all the essential equipment, a room for the sterilization of instruments, a small office and a dental room where resin implants are prepared.

The decision to invest immediately in dentistry was made to meet a great local need, since access to dental care is limited.
Radiology
Radiographic examinations are rarely used in Madagascar given the high operating costs. In our Center we have a traditional radiology device, so we are able to have a constant and regular radiological activity.
Analysis laboratory
Blood testing is not a very common practice in Madagascar. The prohibitive cost of most clinical tests does not allow their dissemination, which is why it is difficult to prescribe tests and doctors must rely on their experience to make diagnoses.
In our Center we have an analysis laboratory active every day with all the necessary tools to guarantee both basic and more complex analyses such as biochemistry, microbiology (we have a GeneXpert for the diagnosis of tuberculosis), hematology, serology and coagulation.
Mobile clinic
Once every 15 days, our nutritional agents, a nutritional biologist, a nurse, a pediatrician and a midwife go on a rotation to the villages near Ampefy, with the aim of providing health care even in the most remote and inaccessible areas.
Together, they create a mobile clinic equipped with medicines and basic tools to provide free general visits and health, nutrition and hygiene education activities. If a medical problem requires specialist visits, patients are referred to our Medical Center.
