Update on the situation in Madagascar (February 2026)

Since the last update in November 2025, the political situation in Madagascar continues to evolve, with direct implications for local communities and for the work of NGOs such as Change.

The political transition in a nutshell

The political transition that began with the overthrow of former president Andry Rajoelina in October 2025 continues under the leadership of Colonel Michael Randrianirina, appointed president of a transitional military council. The military authorities have promised to hold elections and return to a civilian government within 18—24 months.

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has sent technical missions to assess the situation on the ground and facilitate dialogue between political parties, with the aim of supporting stability and a path of national reconciliation.

Despite some openings to civilian appointments, military control remains predominant. According to recent data from Transparency International Initiative Madagascar, the country has experienced a deterioration in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 2025, with a low score and one of the worst positions in the world, highlighting persistent challenges in terms of transparency and good governance.

International reactions

· The United Nations continues to urge the return of constitutional order.

· The African Union maintains the suspension of Madagascar, underlining doubts about the legitimacy of the transitional government.

· International analysts report risks related to human rights and democratic participation, despite some civil initiatives within the military government.
