The NUTRILAB project kicks off in Madagascar

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new chapter for our nutrition service in Madagascar: we have started the NUTRILAB project, an initiative dedicated to strengthening our intervention against malnutrition, by including new activities and tools.

This project allows us to enhance our healthcare response capacity and improve the nutrition program active since 2016, by directing specialized interventions towards children suffering from acute malnutrition and women of childbearing age and during pregnancy.

Greater speed and precision

At the heart of the project is the improvement of the services and care we offer at our Center. The purchase of new equipment for the analysis laboratory at St. Paul Surgical Medical Center will allow us to perform a wider variety of tests, returning results in drastically reduced times.

This way, we will be able to help even more patients recover from malnutrition.

A tangible impact on 6,900 children

Thanks to this project, partly funded by Fondazione Prosolidar:

  • 6,900 children (0-10 years old) will receive periodic monitoring of their nutritional status.
  • 360 children suffering from acute malnutrition will receive specific care at the CMCSP and in the villages.

Our recovery target is ambitious: we aim to see 80 children fully recover from acute malnutrition.

The importance of prevention, starting with adolescent girls

Combating malnutrition also involves prevention and education.

The NUTRILAB project includes a program dedicated to women and future generations:

  • 480 pregnant women will receive nutritional consultations and anemia treatment throughout their maternity journey.
  • 189 adolescents from St Therese High School will participate in educational sessions on nutritional and sexual health. The 105 girls will also receive specific screening and treatment for anemia.

An innovative aspect of the project will be the use of Moringa powder, a valuable local resource, as an effective tool for treating anemia and preventing malnutrition.

The first funds have already been disbursed, and activities are in full swing. In the coming months, we will regularly update you on the progress and results of our analyses.
